Open When.... Letters

I am an avid Pinterest-er. I love it, I don't know what people did before Pinterest! I love getting crafting ideas from there. There is a particular picture that I love of all these envelopes that say "Open when...."
I searched all over Pinterest for the source but I couldn't find it! I then turned to google, which also didn't lead me anywhere. But the point of this little story is that the picture gave me the inspiration to do the same for my boyfriend, but I wanted to know what the rest of the letters said. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anywhere that told me so I had to make up my own. As I searched for a source I noticed that a LOT of people repinned this picture and they also wanted to know what the other letters said. I'm going to post the letters I made to hopefully help anyone else who wanted help making their own letters. :)

***UPDATE***
I'm now selling pre-made kits of letters like the ones in this post. Visit my Etsy shop HERE

Also, check out this other set of letters that I made HERE

If you like my style of crafting, you should check out my sister's Etsy shop HERE. She makes custom pre made scrapbooks and other crafty things. They are GORGEOUS!

I hand folded my own envelopes out of scrapbook paper. Just to make them more fun than a plain envelope! All I did was unfold an envelope (I think it was like a 5X7 I'm not really sure. It was decently sized though), traced it onto the scrapbook paper, folded and glued it together.
If you noticed i tried to imitate the original picture that i found on Pinterest ;)

Here is the list of "Open When"s that I did:
1. You're done with your first day
2. You're having a bad day
3. Just for fun
4. You need a lift
5. You miss me
6. You're angry
7. You're bored
8. You need my love
9. You're happy
10. You're almost done with the program

Sorry, I don't have a picture of the contents of this letter. There was just a one page note and two inspirational quotes.

Contents of this envelopes:
- 1 page letter
- 1 "XOXO" sticky note ( you can buy them HERE from Knock Knock Stuff)
- 1 "How I Feel" fill out paper (You can buy them HERE from Knock Knock Stuff. I LOVE these guys note pads, you'll see that I've used multiple pads in these letters.)
- 1 mini book. How to be Totally Miserable, a self hinder book by John Bytheway
- 1 picture of a failed cake i made (to make him laugh)
- 1 Valentines scratch card ( You can buy them HERE from chronicle books. I LOVE THESE. They also have other ones beside Valentines, but those were the only ones i had at the time of making these. There is a scratch card in probably most of the letters even though none of them are Valentines-y. I just thought they were fun and my man loves scratch cards)
- 3 quotes
- A couple pieces of chocolate (Chocolate Isn't in these letters because my boyfriend can't have any at the moment, but if he could they would totally be in there!)

Everything in here relates to the label on the front "Open when your having a bad day". Some funny things, some hopefully helpful things.

Yes I know, "open when just for fun" makes no sense! I should've done "Open... just for fun" but I didn't.
Contents of this envelope:
- 1 letter
- 1 picture of the two of us
- 2 sudoko puzzles
- 1 word search (camping themed, because he loves that stuff)
- 2 color pages ( colored pencils in a different envelope)
- 1 crossword that I made all about me and my boy (with a small envelope with the answers)
- 1 scratch card ( You can buy them HERE)

Contents of this envelope:
- 1 letter
- 1 spiritual uplifting talk
- 1 set of lyrics to a song we like
- 1 piece of black card stock with some inside jokes on it
- 1 scratch card ( You can buy them HERE)
- 1 mini envelope with balloons in it (images below)
- 2 quotes

I blew up the balloons and wrote some "secret" messages for him. The red balloon says something along the lines of "Sometime we have to left go of things simply for the reason that they are heavy." Which ties in the little picture of the ballon that says Let it go beneath it. Remember, this is in the envelope that is when you need a lift, get it..... balloons..... lift...... I knew you would get it! :)

Contents of this envelope:
- 1 letter
- 1 scratch card ( You can buy them HERE)
- 1 piece of paper that i sprayed with my perfume
- 1 "kiss"
- 1 booklet of pictures of me ( I swear I don't just like to give pictures of me because i think I'm so awesome, this envelope is when you miss me!!! Don't judge me! )

All I did for this booklet was matte the pictures on card stock and then I used washi tape to lightly bind them together. ( I got this idea from my sister, who makes wedding invitations like this. SUPER ADORABLE, check it out with the link in the text) By lightly binding the pictures together with washi tape you can easily take them out and put them back together again. Cool idea huh?

So this is the exception to the " ... I cut up, folded, and glued the envelope together". I folded this square piece of scrapbook paper to look like an envelope (without cutting or glueing anything.) The paper was too cute to cut up and the inside had lines on it for me to write on, so perfect!
Contents of this envelope:
- Letter on paper
- 1 "Sweet Nothing" sticky note ( Unfortunately this sticky note pad is no longer available, but they have a lot of other great ones for sale! Knock Knock Stuff)
- 3 quotes

Contents of this envelope:
- 1 letter
- 2 sudoku puzzles (and instructions in case he doesn't know how to play. But serisously, who doesn't know how to play!)
- 1 His and Her questions for him to fill out and send back to me, just for fun :) Here is the link for the questions from Love the Grows
- 1 scratch card ( You can buy them HERE)
- 2 color pages and colored pencils
- 1 quote

Contents of this envelope:
- 1 letter
- 1 scratch card (You can buy them HERE)
-  Lyrics to the song A Thousand Years
- 1 "Sweet Nothing" note (It is filled out, I just blurred it out. Unfortunately this note pad is no longer available.. But they have a lot of other great note pads! Knock Knock Stuff.)
- 2 quotes
- And heart confetti! ( I made the confetti myself by using a heart paper punch and some heart glitter )

 Contents of this envelope:
- 1 letter
- 1 picture of the two of us
- 1 scratch card (You can buy them HERE)
- 2 pages from the note pad "Why i really really really like you...." ( One is filled out for him, and one I left blank for him to fill out and mail back to me. Unfortunately this note pad is no longer available, but they have a lot of other awesome note pads!)
- 1 page from the note pad "How I Feel" (You can buy it HERE )
- 2 quotes
- lyrics to the song Wish You Were Here, Incubus

Contents of this envelope:
- 1 letter
- 1 "High Five" ( I left it blank for him to fill out for himself when he's done with the program! You can buy the note pad HERE
- 2 quotes
- And of course Star Confetti!!

I wax sealed them all with my cute heart seal :)

And here is the finished project!!! I tied them up with some nice ribbon and mailed them off. Aren't they adorable?? Well I think so and so did my boyfriend. He LOVED them :) Great success.

This was my first ever blog post (even though I've had a blog for over a year)! I hope you enjoyed it, and hope that it was helpful and inspired you to do your own set of letters. Sorry for any misspelled words or any other mistakes.

MISCHIEF MANAGED!

    1. Thank you so much for looking at my post and for the sweet words! I got all my quotes off Pinterest. I would just look under the "quotes" category and save any that fit the envelopes. Or I would search Pinterest for quotes by typing in something like... "Inspirational quotes" or "anger quotes". I then printed them out on regular paper and glued them to card stock. You don't have to matte them on card stock though!

  3. Hello Holly,

Wow! Thank you for this post.
I'm an avid pinner too and I was one of these people I repinned one of "Open when..." (I wanted to do for my boyfriend) and I found it again by chance but I thought: "wow it's better! Examples!"
It the first time I see examples about "Open when" so I though I must comment here :)
They're awesome. I love the envelopes!

Sorry for my English: I'm Spanish.

I love your baskets too (I was looking your blog :D)

    Regards!

  4. Holly,
Thank you so much for sharing this! I have been searching for a long while for other people's take on this cute idea. I too found the original picture and wanted to do it for my boyfriend who is getting ready to move and begin his freshman year of college while I stay in our small hometown and finish my senior year of high school. However, I was totally stuck and could never find any other information on this post! So thank you very much for sharing this; I will be borrowing a couple of your witty, cute ideas, and your post also helped to inspire some of my own! Your creativity is appreciated! Thank you again! I'm glad I found your blog and will be keeping up with it regularly now!

  5. Holly,
Thank you so much for posting this. I also just finished searching Pinterest and Google for the original post and couldn't find it, but it did lead me to your blog. How amazing! I love that you put more than just letters in your envelopes! I wouldn't have thought of coloring pages or quotes. I have a couple of really good friends going through things right now, and was looking for ways to make this work for them. (I didn't really want Open when you're mad at me or Open when you need to know how much I love you). Thank you so much for your blog! If it is ok with you, I would love to pin this. Thanks again!

Thanks so much for posting! My husband is about to deploy and I want to do something like this for him. Did you make the "Open when" labels? If so, how? Thanks again!

    1. I did make the labels! I just typed them up in Word on my computer and printed them on regular copy paper. Then I matted them on card stock that matched the envelopes (I also made the envelopes myself out of scrapbook paper). If you have any other questions feel free to ask! You're husband will LOVE the letters you make :) thank you for looking at my post!

It seriously took me DAYS to think of all the items to include and then to assemble them. And then after that, to write a letter to go in each of them! It's hard to write 10 letters at the same time, you feel like your saying the same thing over and over. Haha that's why it's good to have them broken into different categories so you can write about different stuff. Thanks for the comment!

I'm not as artsy and craftsy as some people, so I just wanted to mention on your blog that a nice, hand-written letter is an alternative. I bought some pretty paper and envelopes at Office Max and used those.

Bonus: because we just got engaged, one of my letters is "Open when... you want to know why I said yes." :)

  24. Hi Holly,

How did you do the Type Keys to the word document?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For the "open when" I used a free font I downloaded to word. It's from dafont, a website that has tons of free fonts! the font i downloaded is called Type Keys. Here is the link if you need it! http://www.dafont.com/type-keys.font
Now how to get the font from the website to your Word is a whole other question. For my Mac I just went to the website, searched for the font (or you can just look through a bunch of them), pressed the red Download button on the left hand side, and it downloaded it. Then I opened my "downloads" in Finder, double clicked the file that was the font, and clicked the Install button.
If you have a PC then im not sure how to install the font to word. I image it's pretty similar. If you have any problems you can always google it! That's how I found out how to do it. I just googled "how to install a new font to word on Mac"
I hope that helped! Or I probably just confused you haha

If you need somewhere to purchase a set like that, I bought some of mine off etsy.com. They have ALL SORTS of different seals and colors of wax! It's awesome. Just go to etsy.com and type in th search box "sealing wax" and a bunch with pop up! (I also love etsy.com) well I hope this helped! If you need any more help feel free to leave another message!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So sorry for not responding sooner! If you still need help with it... being jealous is like feeling insecure in your relationship so just reassure the recipient of the strong relationship. Find a good quote on love and loyalty or something on jealousy. Put in a picture of the two of you. Write some inside jokes or secrets that only the two of you know (so they can feel connected to you in a way no one else can, hopefully relieving some jealous feelings). Anyway... hope that helped!

  39. Just came across your blog exactly because Pinterest offers only the photos of open when letters but no insightful tips on the content! I absolutely loved your post and think it's very sweet. My boyfriend is going abroad for two months and I really wanted to prepare a series of Open When letters and you just gave so many good ideas to be inspired from. Thanks and keep up the great posts! :) Joanna x

  40. Hi Holly
When I saw this I knew I wanted to make some for my boyfriend too, I am making some extra cards and I was just wondering if you had any suggestions on what I should put in them. They are when we're fighting, when you need to know how much you mean to me, when you need to need to know how much I love you, when you need a laugh, when youre sad and when you cant sleep. I would really appreciate it if you could give me some suggestions, thanks

    1. When you need a laugh: Write down some inside jokes or embarrassing moments that would be funny. You could gather up some newspaper clippings of his favorite comic strip. Print out some funny pictures of yourself or the both of you.
When you're sad: (try to distract from the sadness, try distracting him with other good things) like... writing down good memories. Start of bucket list for the future (get him thinking about fun things you are going to do, instead of sad things) Put some chocolate in the envelope, that always helps when im sad! haha
When you cant sleep: Try putting in one of those Sleep Masks and some of those foam ear plugs things (In case the reason he cant sleep is because its really bright or loud) Or a small hand warmer that is lavender scented to help him fall asleep?
When you need to know how much you mean to me: Tell him to take a good look at these letters you made!! haha kidding... lets see. Make a bunch of strips of paper and write something you admire or respect about him on each one.

      Hope this helps!!

  43. My best friend showed me that original picture a while back, and I'm surprising her with about 20 of these letters as her Christmas present!! She's going away to college next year, so I also included some of those that an earlier comment-er mentioned for her sister. I also added "when you're hungry" (chick-fil-a giftcard & granola bar), "when you're going on a road trip" (mix CD & note), and "when you finished your first day" (letter & stickers & quote). Your examples were a tremendous help!!!

Does anyone think it would be weird to do some for someone if they aren't leaving and you aren't leaving???

    1. its definitely not weird I'm doing some for my boyfriend and he lives 30 minutes away from me

    2. No way! These don't just have to be for people who are far away. The thing about letters for people who are close, you can do other stuff with them. Like you can put in "coupons" that they can use right away. Like if its "open when you're sick" you could put in a coupon for "Bringing you hot soup of your choice" and then you could actually bring them that soup.

  46. Thank you for posting this! I'm going to do this for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day (Only because I wouldn't be able to have it done by Christmas or our 6 month), and I was stuck on what letters to write, so I was looking around on Pinterest and I found your post. It helped me come up with so many more ideas, and helped me figure out what to put in them. Instead of just letters, I'm going to put some of them in bags and boxes for him to open too. So far I have 28 ideas. I'm probably going to go up to 30. It'll really help him because I left for college and he's going to the community college by his house, and the whole distance thing has been rough for the both of us. Hopefully this little project can smooth out the bumps in our relationship! This post really helped me out a lot! So thank you(:

  47. I think a version of these for kids (when they go away to camp, to keep in their locker at school, etc.) would be great, too.

When I was Googling for the original image's source (which ultimately lead me here), I came across a Yahoo! Q&A where someone posted a bunch of great ideas they used for their boyfriend. Here's the link so others can benefit. :)

  48. thank you so much for posting this! I noticed that the edges of your envelopes have color to them and i was just wondering how you did that? the extra color adds a cute touch!

    1. I like how you noticed that! :) Not very many people do. I use an ink pad! (well actually I use several different ones) Like the kind you would use for stamps. You can get them at pretty much any craft store! the brand I use is AMERICAN CRAFTS Brand. They come in lots of different colors! I currently have about 15 different colors. I hope that answers your question!

    2. I used to only use black on everything which just gives the edges a little distressed look, plus it emphasizes the edge of the paper more. But if you noticed I used a lot of different colors for the letters in this post, I changed them to match each envelope. You don't have to do that though! You could just do Brown on all of them and that would look great too.

    1. Hi there! Sorry for not responding sooner. For the text that has the circles around it I used a font called Type Keys. I downloaded it for free from Dafont. Here is the link if you need it!
